While just a week has passed since recent floods that affected Peru, another problem hit the country. An outbreak of dengue fever in recent days has killed at least seven people, hundreds of infected are reported. Their number is growing every day.
Regions such as Piura and Canete are amongst those worst hit by floods and are on alert now for dengue. The government has decided to mobilise its army to distribute aid, mobile clinics are set throughout the country. Some three hundred cases are reported daily in Piura alone.
Dengue fever is an acute viral disease. It is accompanied by severe pain. The symptoms of this disease are similar to the symptoms of flu. A serious and potentially fatal form of the disease occurs in approximately 5% of patients. The main vector of infection are mosquitoes.
