The Swedish scientists said they found fossilized red algae aged 1.6 billion years. This means that the first complex plant organisms appeared on Earth much earlier than expected before.
According to scientists, the age of the recovered red algae is about one billion 600 million years, which puts the origin of plant life on the planet back 400 million years compared to previous estimates.
The fossils were brought from India. Scientists conducted a detailed study using x-rays to establish the age of the samples.
