An operation is underway in Russia's Far East to rescue a bowhead whale stranded in the shallow waters of an island in the Sea of Okhotsk in Khabarovsk region.
According to a local environmental agency, the 13-metre long whale is believed to have swum up a river estuary on Bolshoy Shantar at high tide and became beached after the water retreated.
Conservation workers from a local nature reserve are attempting to keep the whale hydrated in anticipation of high tide at night.
The whale, which was injured during its struggle against the rocks in the shallow waters, is currently unable to independently turn or swim back into the sea.
Officials said local specialists are in contact with experts in rescuing marine mammals and the Russian Environment Minister Sergey Donskoy is monitoring the operation.
