The International Labour Organization (ILO), headed by the Director of the regional bureau for Europe and Central Asia H. Koller is arriving in Tashkent at the end of February.
The visit purpose is to sign the Memorandum on the extension of the "Decent Work Country Programme" for the period 2017-2020., which will provide a solid base for further active and constructive cooperation between Uzbekistan and the ILO. The parties will also agree new additional measures for cooperation on a wide range of issues related to the protection of labour and ensuring workers ' rights.
The country programme in the Republic of Uzbekistan for 2014-2016 has provided for the implementation of activities in the following areas:
- strengthening social partnership in Uzbekistan to implement fundamental principles and rights at work;
- expansion of opportunities for decent employment;
- improvement of working conditions and social protection.
Over the past period of its operation, the Country programme strengthened the constructive cooperation between Uzbekistan and the ILO, IOE and ITUC, and other international partners.
Thanks to the efforts of the social partners and the technical support of the ILO, in a short period Uzbekistan has made significant progress on the implementation of international labour norms and standards.
A recent report by the ILO published in February 2017 highlighted that Uzbekistan has "eradicated the practice of child labour and has made significant progress to prevent forced labour during the cotton harvest. The country demonstrates a responsible and balanced approach to international obligations in the sphere of labor, continues constructive social dialogue between government, employers and trade unions".
The extension of Decent Work Country Programme for 2017-2020, with the development of additional measures for interaction, once again reaffirms the commitment of the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan to international obligations and contribute to the further strengthening of the capacity of the social partners in Uzbekistan, strengthening the cooperation with the ILO and other international organizations.
